Names of the Tengwar

« Writing  «          Course Index         » Writing English in Tengwar  »

This entire section on writing is optional. This post on letter names is all "Extra Material for Geeks."

All the letters have “names”, which is how Elvish children learning their tengwar would refer to them. These “names” are simple words, usually starting with the appropriate letter.

tinco (metal)
parma (book)
calma (lamp)
quessë (feather)
ando (gate)
umbar (fate)
anga (iron)
ungwë (spider's web)
thúlë/súlë (spirit)
formen (north)
harma (treasure) or aha (rage)
hwesta (breeze)
anto (mouth)
ampa (hook)
anca (jaws)
unquë (a hollow)
órë (inner mind)(spelled the same as órë, rising, which we saw earlier)
Vala
anna (gift)
wilya (air, sky)(an old-fashioned spelling)
númen (west)
malta (gold)
Ngoldo (Noldo)
nwalmë (torment)

rómen (east)
arda (region)
ambë (tongue)
alda (tree)
silmë (starlight)
silmë nuquerna (s reversed)
essë (name)
essë nuquerna (ss reversed)
hyarmen (south)
yanta (bridge)
anar (sun)
ára (dawn)

Middle-Earth maps generally showed West at the top of the page.
Thus hyarmen (south) also means “left-hand side” and formen (north) also means “right-hand-side”.
