Conjunctions

 « Prepositions «        Course Index        Samples          » Cases - Preposition-Style »

Conjunctions are used exactly the same as in English, to join phrases.

and                          ar
except                     enga
on the contrary    anat
and yet                   ananta
because                 an

Examples:
Huonya varnë ar ninquë.    My dog is brown and white.
Huonya varnë, ar alquanya ninquë.    My dog is brown, and my swan is white.
Yaxenyar nár varnë enga tana morë yaxë.    My cows are brown, except that black cow.
Yaxenyar nár varnë, enga tana yaxë ná morë.    My cows are brown, except that cow is black.
Eldar nár ilfirin, anat Atani nár engwa.    Elves are immortal; on the contrary, Humans are sickly.
Sina súrë ná milya ananta ringa.    This wind is gentle and yet cold.
Súrë ná milya, ananta ciryalya lelya larcavë.    Wind is gentle, and yet your ship travels rapidly.

Extra Material for the Geeks:
An English speaker would probably say “the wind.”  A Quenya speaker would probably think it silly to specify which wind, when there is no danger of confusion.

Larca is the adjective “rapid.”  Larcavë makes sense as the adverb “rapidly,” though it is not one of the words Tolkien wrote down.  Tolkien neglected to mention many useful words.

Sina limpë ná lissë , an yávië nánë lauca.    This wine is sweet because the harvest-season was warm.
